NYC Public Housing Proposal
Fall 2021 - Rhode Island School of Design
Instructors: Lafayette Cruise, Jess Myers, Anne Tate
Collaborators: Thierry Andrianambinina, Aaron Jelinek
The objective of this project was to respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP) written by fellow classmates for a given NYC public housing development.
Our response proposal aimed to provide quality, accessible, and affordable housing for persons with varying levels of mobility and ability. We sought to design spaces, incorporate systems, and implement programming that promote community interaction. The interventions create an environment that encourages self-sufficiency for residents.
Both the exterior and interior feature tactile surfaces to facilitate the movement of visually impaired residents. Section A portrays an olfactory, or scent based, navigation intervention. The color palatte is informed through the scents of chosen plants. The program layout emphasises community interaction on the ground and 11th floor terrace. Gardening was proposed as a driver for interaction between residents and with the larger New York community.
