Making the Chair

Complex Furniture Study

Fall 2022 - Rhode Island School of Design
Instructors: Nancy Nichols, Evan Farley
Collaborator: Yoonji Kang

As the final project for a large scale making course, myself and a partner were tasked with creating a unique piece of furniture. The digital rendering of our final waffled chair design is shown below.

Any and all shop tools including a large CNC machine were at our disposal. We determined the best and cheapest way to produce this design was with styrofoam. The forms were achieved by cutting out plywood guides with the CNC machine and then using a hotwire cutting tool to cut out the curved chair sections.
